Big FAITH in Beckley, West Virginia
Just a few days before the start of camp, something very serious happened to me. Emotionally, I was not feeling 100% and I wasn’t sure whether or not it would affect the time I would be spending with the campers as a counselor? That’s when God spoke to me about one of the two campers I would be with at camp—the oldest. His message was clear, I needed to go and I would understand ‘why’ later.
Upon my arrival at camp, I was very excited to meet the girls. I prayed that I would be what God needed me to be for them that week … one of the best weeks ever!
I met the camper whom God had spoken to me about, but the other camper was late to arrive. I very soon learned that the reason for her tardiness was that she was in the process of being adopted that very morning! When I saw her, I was sure to let her know that her excuse was “a most perfect one!”
I fell for my girls instantly. A few days into camp week however, I didn’t feel as though I was getting through to them or making an impact in any significant way. Shortly after, the oldest of the two campers conveyed to me what had happened to her recently. I prayed with her. I had to walk away shortly thereafter, because I was in tears. I was wearing a necklace that I had received at a purity conference in the past. The pendant was a penny with a cross, and it meant ‘priceless.’ It was something I wore everyday because it made me feel that I was worthy. I walked back over to the camper and gave her my necklace. She cried because she not only knew how much I loved it, but had also learned that I never take it off.
I’m so happy that I made it to camp that summer and grateful for the opportunity to spend time with these two girls. I had to have faith straight from the start, get to camp, and be open to what God would show me. I learned a lot, and as much as I wanted to help change the campers’ lives when I went there, they changed mine. The experience was more than worth it. I’m more than ready for camp this upcoming year!
