FAITH Amidst It All in Alaska
Royal Family KIDS camp is a total walk of faith from the moment we say “Yes, I will attend Director’s training” to the completion of the first camp that we hold. The faith walk is continuous as we raise funds to hold camp, get the campers there, ensure the camp staff is in place, and find camp sponsors. There are so many stories of faith, but there’s one in particular that the Spirit keeps bringing to the forefront of my heart and mind, and it’s the story of ‘Repeat.’
In 2009, Jarett applied to volunteer for the ‘2nd Cousin’ role at RFK Camp Anchorage. He completed the application and responded “NO” to the question “Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior?” As an interview team, we asked him again. He said, “Nope…I don’t know Jesus.” Jarett came highly recommended. He was on an Eagle Scout tract, loved children, and had volunteered many years at Boy Scout camps. As a team, we believed he was a perfect fit.
With great enthusiasm, Jarett came to camp with a willing spirit and participated in everything. In 2009, the theme was Sheep Fold. Jarett enthusiastically became the character of Repeat—the sheep who repeated everything. The campers loved him. He was never called Jarett but “Repeat.” While at camp we repeat the fact that God loves us. For Jarett however, this was the first time he had heard.
Since 2009 to present, Jarett has only missed one year of participating in our RFK camp. He plays the role of ‘Cousin’ with passion, and helps to train others for the same role. Jarett also participated in ‘Passing the Scepter’ in Alaska. He has been camp staff at RFK Kenai and MatSu and part of the RFK Anchorage leadership team. Jarett graduated from UAA with an elementary education degree and works at Fred Ipalook Elementary school in Barrow (Utquiagvik), Alaska. He aspires to be a camp director. All of these accomplishments are not as important as his commitment and relationship with Jesus. After being introduced to Jesus at RFK, Jarett committed his life to Him. Currently, Jarett is involved in Chi Alpha as a small group leader, and will begin an internship and full- time ministry this summer.
Jarett is just one person’s faith journey, as a result of Royal Family KIDS camp.
