A Memorable Interview
One Sunday afternoon, we were doing camp volunteer interviews for the upcoming summer camp season. We had interviewed 17 solid people who wanted to serve at camp. One of the volunteers (we’ll call him Nelson), had the last appointment. He called to say he was going to be late. To not waste time, the interview panel met in the reception area of the church office and were going over the applicants. We then decided to have some fun with the imminent interview. Nelson arrived. He walks into our office and saw 15 people and one empty chair. We told him to have a seat.
Many of the interview panel members held evaluation forms, and I asked all of the questions. All attention on Nelson. Immediately, Nelson commented “I should have been on time.” During the interview, Nelson looked at his Apple watch. I asked if he had some other place to be? Without missing a beat he said “it was a text from my mother, she just told me that I was adopted.” The room erupted in laughter.
Nelson and all of our applicants were quality people. Nelson was a great sport that day. He could have gotten nervous when he was up against 15 people instead of just a few. He simply sat down an did the interview. He also shut me down with his wit when I asked if he had some place to go? We welcome Nelson at camp to say the least!
