Usually when visiting a church, we simply find a place to park in the parking lot. But things got a bit more complicated when the RFK RV drove to Tom Stephen’s church in Portland. They were having an outdoor service, (just as it began sprinkling of course!) and wanted the RV by the lawn. So Allan had church members guide him down a narrow, winding road accompanied by a few overhead dangling branches to a large open field where the RV could be seen by everyone.
During the service, Tom recognized Grandma and Grandpa Hoine who have been an integral part of camp for 16 years! Then we had the privilege of honoring Nina Horne, who…get ready…was a camper for six years and has been a counselor for five years! It was amazing to hear how camp changed her life and how she is now sharing the RFK experience with other young campers.
After the service, everyone enjoyed a picnic lunch on the lawn as people came over in a steady stream to talk to Royal Family KIDS’ volunteers in their red shirts. I’m glad I made our bed that morning because we had over 50 people come inside and “tour” the RV! It was very evident that the church supported RFK and the dedicated volunteers that support the program.
